This paper presents a novel design for a distributed amplifier operating in the 24 GHz band, targeting applications in automotive radar and fifth-generation (5G) mobile communications. The 24 GHz band is widely used in automotive radar and high-speed communication systems, necessitating amplifiers with low noise figure and wide bandwidth. The most suitable approach to achieve wide bandwidth with an acceptable noise figure is the use of a distributed amplifier architecture. This work proposes two distinct configurations for the distributed amplifier: a high-pass and a band-pass topology. In both designs, efforts are made to eliminate the drain and gate transmission line resistors. This removal aims to achieve higher efficiency and gain, concurrently yielding a lower noise figure and a more compact physical footprint. Furthermore, the design utilizes lumped model of inductors, implying components with a high-quality factor (more than 15). The implemented two-stage distributed amplifier demonstrates a 13% bandwidth centered at 24 GHz. Fabricated in TSMC 0.18 μm technology, both architectures achieve a noise figure below 6 dB, a gain of approximately 10 dB, and VSWR of less than 2.
