Abstract

According to standards of International Telecommunication Union, reflector antenna shaping for covering a certain area of the earth by a satellite in the geostationary orbit (GEO) is inevitable. In this paper, the use of radial basis functions is proposed to shape the reflector antenna surface. The key feature of the proposed method is that the distortion created on the surface of the antenna by radial basis functions is smoother than the other basis functions that have been introduced so far. As a result, this method makes the manufacturing antenna process easier. In addition, by using radial basis functions, there is no need for constrained optimization to control the distortion of the antenna surface. To show effectiveness of radial basis functions in smooth shaping of the reflector antenna, covering the country of Australia by a reflector antenna mounted on a satellite in GEO orbit is simulated and its results are compared with other basis functions such as Zernike and B-spline basis functions. This comparison shows that the radial basis functions provide smoother surface of the antenna in a way that makes the realization of the antenna is easier.
